The
King Valley Grapegrowers Association was formed in 1983 and in 2002
changed its name to King Valley Vignerons, to reflect the growing
proportion of winemakers in the group. It is the best-supported
and most active association of its type in Australia with 106 members.
The constant interchange of ideas amongst its members and willingness
to adapt new world technologies has been a major factor in the very
high standard of viticulture being practiced in the region.
Production of wine grapes in the King Valley for 2003 was approximately
12,000 tonnes. Grapes from the King Valley find a ready market,
supplying over 20 companies outside the region, including some of
Australia's leading wineries, including Miranda, Mildara, BRL Hardy,
Petaluma, Yalumba, Brokenwood, Yarra Ridge, De Bortoli, Orlando
and Southcorp.
The members of the King Valley Vignerons believe the King Valley
to be a premium grapegrowing region. The trend towards Mediterranean
varietial wines and the wider use of the regional name "King Valley"
on wine labels is creating a public awareness of the quality of
their product and is building a reputation for the area. There are
now 20 wineries, mostly of a boutique size and all with cellar doors,
operating in the King Valley.
The development of a significant number of small wineries in the
area provides a focus for tourists visiting the area and the upgraded
Mansfield-Whitfield Road, should now allow for easy access to the
King Valley.
We wish every visitor to our region a happy and enjoyable experience!
